Planilandia<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo ser\u00eda la existencia en un mundo de dos dimensiones? \u00bfY de una sola? \u00bfY de ninguna dimensi\u00f3n? Y, por encima de las tres dimensiones, \u00bfexisten espacios de 4, 5, 10 o m\u00e1s dimensiones? Y, si existen, \u00bfse puede conectar con ellos?<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0En Planilandia<\/em>, la fantas\u00eda matem\u00e1tica se entrecruza con otro g\u00e9nero: el de la s\u00e1tira social (en su variante de viajes imaginarios en clave c\u00f3mica, en la l\u00ednea de Rabelais o Swift). La cr\u00edtica social aqu\u00ed alcanza mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la sociedad victoriana que constitu\u00eda su blanco directo. La condici\u00f3n plana del mundo de Planilandia<\/em>, y la consiguiente imposibilidad, para las figuras planas que lo habitan, de mirar hacia arriba o hacia abajo, funcionan como una eficaz met\u00e1fora para la representaci\u00f3n sat\u00edrica de la estrechez de miras de una sociedad regida por una elite satisfecha de s\u00ed misma, cuyo prestigio se basa en la desigualdad institucionalizada. Las posiciones de Edwin A. Abbott, favorables a la completa emancipaci\u00f3n de la mujer, a una igualdad universal de derechos c\u00edvicos cuya consecuci\u00f3n comportar\u00eda el derrocamiento de las capas sociales dirigentes, y a la instauraci\u00f3n de una democracia popular sustentada por el (entonces todav\u00eda lejano) sufragio universal, podr\u00edan ser suscritas desde las posiciones sociopol\u00edticas m\u00e1s avanzadas de la actualidad.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0Al cabo, pues, de m\u00e1s de un siglo de su primera publicaci\u00f3n, Planilandia<\/em> es un imprescindible relato de desbordante ingenio matem\u00e1tico, al tiempo que aguda s\u00e1tira social.<\/p>\n

Edwin A. Abbott (1838-1926) se gradu\u00f3, en la Universi\u00addad de Cambridge, en Cl\u00e1sicas, Matem\u00e1ticas y Teolog\u00eda. Fue docente universitario y ejerci\u00f3 como te\u00f3logo y fil\u00f3logo (son magistrales sus estudios sobre el lenguaje de Shakespeare). Si bien escribi\u00f3 m\u00e1s de cincuenta libros, su fama descansa hoy, casi exclusivamente, en el \u00fanico que dedic\u00f3 al g\u00e9nero que ha hecho tambi\u00e9n famoso, con Alicia en el Pa\u00eds de las Maravillas (1865), a su contempor\u00e1neo Lewis Carroll: la fantas\u00eda matem\u00e1tica, o, seg\u00fan hoy suele preferirse, la cien\u00adcia-ficci\u00f3n matem\u00e1tica, un campo en el que Planilandia comparte con Alicia la condici\u00f3n de suprema obra maestra.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
